Privacy
Olive is a private archive for your family. We never sell your information or show ads. Only people your family invites can see it, and a small number of companies help us run Olive.

What we never do
- We never sell your family's information.
- We never show ads, and never share your information with advertisers or data brokers.
- We never publish your family tree. Shared previews don't appear in search results.
- We never scan or recognize faces. A person chooses each face by hand.
What we collect
What your family adds, what we need to run your account, and basic visit counts.
What your family adds. People and their dates, places and relationships. Photos, faces, keepsakes, recipes, stories, voice notes, documents and sources. Health notes, if the household owner adds them.
Your account. Your name, email, and who in the tree you are. For the household admin, billing details held by Stripe. We never see or store card numbers.
When you visit. Basic page visits and speed, so we can keep Olive working well. Sign-in cookies keep you signed in.
How we use it
Only to run Olive for your family:
- to show your family's archive to the people you invited;
- to email you sign-in codes and important account messages;
- to keep Olive safe, working and backed up.
Who can see it
Only people your family invited.
-
Family you invite. They can see the whole archive, except health notes.
-
Health notes. Only the household owner can see them.
-
People outside the family only see a small preview when someone sends them a link:
- A living relative: a name and a face.
- Someone who has died: a name, face and years.
-
Olive staff look at your archive only to fix a problem you've asked about, or to keep Olive safe.
Companies that help run Olive
Each one gets only what it needs to do its job.
- Supabase stores the archive. They hold everything your family adds.
- Vercel serves the app. They see page visits and basic device information.
- Stripe takes payment. They get the household admin's billing details.
- Resend sends email. They get names and email addresses, for welcome and account emails.
- Mapbox runs place search and maps. They get the place names you type or add.
- Anthropic and OpenAI read a document or photo, transcribe a voice note, or answer a question, when you ask. They get the item you asked about; for a question, the family details needed to answer it.
- FamilySearch runs record search, only if you turn it on. They get the names, dates and places you search for.
Anthropic and OpenAI get only what's needed for what you asked, and only when you ask. Their business terms don't let them use it to train their systems.
Your chat app
What your chat app sees follows that app's rules.
If you connect Olive to Claude, ChatGPT, Grok or another chat app:
- Access. The app sees only what you look up, using your own sign-in.
- Its own rules. What that app keeps is covered by its own privacy settings, which you control there.
Living relatives
Many people in a family archive never signed up. We take extra care with them:
- Outside the family, they show as a name and a face only.
- Corrections and removal. A living relative can ask us to correct or remove information about them, even if they aren't a member.
Your choices
You can ask us to:
- send you a copy of your family's archive;
- correct something;
- delete information about you, or close your account.
Email hello@thisolive.com. We answer within 30 days. See How do I get a copy of everything, or have it deleted?
How long we keep it
For as long as your household uses Olive.
- Deleted items go to the Trash, and the household admin can restore them. Ask us if you want something removed for good.
- Backups. We keep a daily backup for 14 days.
Children
Olive accounts are for adults and teens 13 or older. Families often add photos and stories of their children; those follow the same rules as everything else here.
Keeping it safe
- Sign-in. Every page of your archive needs a signed-in family member.
- Codes, not passwords. Sign-in uses one-time codes sent to your email.
- Private links. Invite and tree links are long and random. Making a new one turns the old one off.
- Transfer. Information travels to and from Olive over an encrypted connection.
Changes to this page
If we change this page in a way that matters, we'll tell the household admin by email before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the last update.
